Holiday Gift Guide For Her

Happy Monday! I hope everyone had a great weekend, and Thanksgiving if you celebrated it.

There have been some gorgeous collections in my favourite shops this season so I couldn't resist putting together a gift guide, just in case you need a little inspiration. I've already mentioned how much I love blush shades this season so this list will be #RomanticGalSociety inspired. Prices range from Secret Santa steals ($12.50 CAD) to extra-special splurges ($317 CAD). Here are my favourite things to gift someone special (or treat yourself to!).

Holiday Gift Guide For Her:

1. Amber Illusion Crop Top. For Love & Lemons.
2. Lena Ruffle Romper. For Love & Lemons.
3. Herbivore Coconut Milk Bath Soak & Coco Rose Body Polish. Ban.do.
4.  Rose Crossbody Circle Bag. Ban.do.

Wednesday, 15 November 2017
Pink-kismet-bath-soak

This week, I've been thinking about all the ways daily life can take a toll on us. Let's face it: life is never perfectly calm. More often than not, we've got a lot of things going on at once. So how can we ever be truly well if we're stressing all the time? The trick is taking time out to do something for ourselves to alleviate that tension. Wanna learn how? Here are 24 simple ways you can practice self-care.

Friday Favorites: 07/11/17
Photos from Free People and A Pair & A Spare.

Anyone else already transitioning into Winter prep? Life has been so hectic lately that I was late on the deadline for this post, so this is technically a Saturday Favourites. Oh well, Ces't la vie!

I had a hard time deciding which items to feature on this list. It seems the most adorable collections come out just before Winter. Luckily, I'm working on a few shopping guides and wishlists to be published this month so I won't have to pare down my favourites! Enjoy this taste of cute things to come.

It may not be Spring, but this week's 5 Things I Love post is filled with florals and blush tones and giving me all the Spring feels. As much as I love warm Fall colour palettes, I've been crazy about soft pink lately, and I've been trying to incorporate more of it into my outfits and decor. I've rounded up some pretty blush things to wish for and make and bring you back to that chill, bloomy state of mind.

Simple Ways To Practice Minimalism

Simple Ways To Practice Minimalism

Although I'm far from a minimalist, I've always been curious about the minimalist lifestyle. It sounds so wonderfully freeing to be able to live with less; some are even able to fit all their possessions in a few boxes! I remain a collector at heart, though, and let's be real: there's no way I'm fitting all my clothes in a couple of suitcases.

4 Ways To Feel Better About Social Media

4 Ways To Feel Better About Social Media

"Comparison is the thief of joy" is an expression I use often. Despite these reminders, however, I still have to confess to falling into the trap of comparing myself to others. For a blogger and an aspiring artist, social media can be a wonderful thing, but lately, I've caught myself comparing everything to that of others - my art, my photography skills, my lifestyle and, of course, my appearance. What's more, I also share my work and base its worth on the validation I receive, or the lack thereof.

Quick, Easy Ways To Get Tousled, Bohemian Waves

Quick, Easy Ways To Get Tousled, Bohemian Waves

Who doesn't love tousled waves?

I'm growing my hair out at the moment, and the layers are a bit all over the place. Right now, I'm all about bohemian waves, because they hide that quite well. I don't like to use a lot of product in my hair, and as a lazy girl, I don't like to spend forever on my hair in the morning either. I'd rather hit snooze!

The Last Days Of Summer

Monday, 25 September 2017
The Last Days Of Summer

The first days of Autumn are upon us, but I couldn't let Summer slip past without one more outfit post. As excited as I am for Fall, I'm going to miss the easy days of just throwing on a pair of denim shorts. I'm a lazy girl at heart, so denim shorts are pretty much my Summer wardrobe (besides comfy dresses, of course).

Faithful The Brand: Shades Of Summer

I mentioned in my last Five Things I Love post that I was looking for one more taste of summer. This week's featured brand is exactly what I had in mind.

Faithful The Brand is an Australian clothing collection designed by the duo of Aussie Sarah-Jane Abrahams and Norwegian Helle-Them Enger. Inspired by the modern traveller, Faithful's pieces are three things above all else: luxurious, versatile and easy.

Art is one of my passions, and when I started Jackie O My, I envisioned a place to share all the things I love. For this reason, I'm excited to introduce a new post series today called Featured Artist. In these posts, I will, well, feature artists that I love and that inspire me. I will start with an artist I discovered this year who has quickly become one of my all time favourites.

The Jetset Diaries: Canyon

Autumn is my favourite season for style; there's nothing like comfy jeans, oversized sweaters, and shades of burgundy and wine. The Jetset Diaries has just released Canyon, their Fall 2017 collection, and I am swooning over the billowy layers and rich earth tones.

Brand Love: Chasing Unicorns

Friday, 18 August 2017
Brand Love: Chasing Unicorns

I discovered Chasing Unicorns recently, and although their aesthetic pulled me in, their philosophy is what made me fall in love. A bit of their story:

"Chasing Unicorns grew from a life long love of vintage, a decade of global roaming, and the desire to create beautiful, timeless, quality pieces that are made to last. We adore the idea of lasting fashion as opposed to ephemeral trends and have endeavoured to give each piece a special hand-finish that will make the wearer want to treasure it forever. These are clothes intended to be passed on from mother to daughter, from one sibling to the next and then on to your children's children. Standing the test of time, just like the beautiful vintage they are inspired from."

The Benefits Of Writing In A Journal

Monday, 14 August 2017

I recently sat down to read a stack of my old journals. Thrilling, right? The dates spanned the last five years; particularly tough times in my life. I anticipated it would be a dreary activity, but was surprised to feel a surge of pride when I closed the last book. I hadn't realised how much I had changed in as little as five years! I started to consider all the good journaling can do - it really can be an act of self-care. If you're looking for a reason to pick up a pen, here are some benefits of writing in a journal.

I'm back with another brand to love, and yet again it hails from the land down under. ROWIE The Label is the namesake of Byron Bay native Rowie Moore, self-taught designer and lover of vintage. The Australian artist takes her inspiration from the colourful streets of NSW, a haven for bohemians since the 1970's.

How To Be A Fashion Blogger On A Budget

Monday, 31 July 2017
Floral Print Navy Dress

Earlier this month, I shared a list of my favourite resources for new fashion bloggers. If you've recently started a fashion blog of your own, you've probably realised by now that it takes more than design resources and worksheet freebies to keep it running; it takes a vast and ever-changing wardrobe.

You Are Beautiful

Friday, 21 July 2017
You Are Beautiful

Remember My Pale Skin's inspirational video about the unrealistic standard of beauty? It is one of my all time favourite videos on YouTube, and it continues to move me every time I watch it. I watch it when I feel insecure, and am reminded of two great truths about beauty. The first is that there is a huge double standard when it comes to appearance; if you're deemed unattractive, it's like a fatal fault in your character, one that is your responsibility to fix for the benefit of others. If you're attractive, however, you're perceived as fake and conceited.

The second truth is that every woman, no matter how beautiful, thin, or popular, is subjected to this same harsh criticism. There really is no winning. There seems to be an entire world of people out there that want you to feel bad about yourself. These people want you to feel inferior and insecure. The nasty comments on your Instagram pictures are not coming from a place of truth, but rather from the hope of hurting you as much as possible simply because they can. As if your appearance has anything to do with your right to feel happiness.

Book Club: The Little Book Of Hygge

Monday, 17 July 2017
Review: The Little Book Of Hygge | Jackie O My

As I said when I shared my Simple Ways To Practice Hygge, I'm totally interested in a lifestyle that embraces simple pleasures and comforts. After finishing The Little Book Of Hygge: The Danish Way To Live Well earlier this week, I'm looking forward to making hygge a part of my daily routine more than ever.

Meik Wiking is the CEO of the Happiness Research Institute in Copenhagen, as well as the author of The Little Book Of Hygge. I have to say that when it comes it Danish living, he really knows his stuff.

The Little Book is indeed petite and boasts a beautiful hardcover. The artwork is what drew me to this book in the first place (besides never needing an excuse to add some extra happiness to my life). The cover features a lovely hyggelig illustration of candles and a blue tea kettle; very fitting. The book contains pretty illustrated charts throughout, as well as lovely full page colour photos.

What is Hygge?

For those who don't know, hygge is a little difficult to define, but most agree it has to do with coziness, togetherness, contentedness, comfort, and wool sweaters. The first thing we learn in The Little Book Of Hygge is that Danes are crazy about candles. The book talks extensively about how to have a hygge home, hygge home decor,  how to dress in hygge clothing, and hygge traditions. I quickly felt overwhelmed and vaguely panicked; hygge is evidently a lot more effort than I anticipated. Meik Wiking admits that the Danish are perhaps a bit hygge obsessed. There is a lot of talk about adhering to hygge tradition. In fact, there's an entire section devoted to the origin of the word, and I won't lie, that section is dull. However, see it through; the book quickly shifts and picks up again.

The Best Places To Shop For Jewelry

I've been on a bit of a jewelry-buying binge lately. While I usually only wear earrings, I've been obsessed with that touch of shimmer Jewelry adds to an otherwise simple outfit. My favourite pieces are delicate and ethereal; unfortunately, it can be hard to find jewelry to suit my individual taste. If you too are looking for something extraordinary, I've collected the best places to shop for unique jewelry so you can browse to your heart's content!

Bohemian In Lilac

Monday, 26 June 2017
Bohemian In Lilac

Another week is in full swing! Did anyone else feel like the weekend wasn't quite long enough? Today I'm back with another outfit post featuring a flowy dress I've just added to my wardrobe.

I fell in love with this dress when I visited one of my favourite local shops, Montrose & George. It's made by PS The Label, which I hadn't previously heard of, but they make some beautiful pieces. The material is so soft, almost silky, and I love the lilac colour. I paired it with my trusty wedge heels and vegan leather bucket bag for an understated, casual look, keeping with that boho vibe. I kept my hair in loose waves to play up the carefree, effortless aspect.

Innika Choo Summer 2017

I was absolutely blown away today when I discovered Innika Choo's Summer 2017 collection. I'd never heard of the Australian-born designer before, and I honestly can't imagine why. Her style is perfection; this frilly, feminine collection incorporates pops of bold colour, giving the old-fashioned silhouettes fresh, unexpected life.

The Art Of Becoming Unbusy

Thursday, 18 May 2017
The Art Of Becoming Unbusy

For the past several months, my to-do list has been packed. I jot down a nightly list of everything I "need" to do the next day, including eating right, getting some exercise, practising the piano, writing either a blog post or creatively for practice, journaling, meditating, posting on my social media accounts, reading from the giant stack of books that's collected next to my bed, practising painting, doing yoga, and running any extra errands I may have. On top of that, I've been working on three different "challenges" simultaneously: a blog post challenge, a happiness challenge, and a self-improvement challenge. All of this has left me very little time unwind, and even relaxing has started to feel like just another item to check off a list. No wonder I've been so stressed!

Sugarhigh Lovestoned: Aloha State Of Mind

Sugarhigh Lovestoned Lookbook: Aloha State Of Mind

The other day, I discovered Sugarhigh Lovestoned, and absolutely fell in love. I featured one of their tees on my last Five Things I Love post. I just had to share their lookbook for Summer 2017, Aloha State Of Mind.
I love the bohemian, vintage Hawaii theme of this shoot. The colour tones and candid poses are fantastic. I honestly want to buy everything! I could even imagine rocking the super retro terracotta pants.

A Little White Tea House

Monday, 15 May 2017
Little White Tea House

Last week I had the pleasure of stopping by Little White House & Co., a lovely tea shop located downtown, for the first time.

I've walked past the little white house countless times in the past, and have always been curious about it; its pretty white french doors are always propped open, and inside I catch glimpses of smiling people dining on high tea and sandwiches. Chiffon dresses with price tags hang on mannequins in the shop windows. It has always perplexed me; is it a store, or a restaurant? Charmingly, it's both.

Why You Should Never Compare Your Journey To Others

Why You Should Never Compare Your Journey To Others

"Good artists copy, great artists steal."
-Pablo Picasso

For as long as I've known what a blog is, I've wanted one of my own. The first blog I ever read was Amy Flying A Kite. My sister showed it to me several years ago, and I did, and still do, think it's one of the best blogs I've ever seen. I love the poetry. I love the photography. I love how the whole thing is like curated flashes of a perfect life. Everything is beautiful, and I find myself wishing every time I visit her blog that I could live such a rustic, artistic Canadian existence.

Hello May

Thursday, 4 May 2017

Hello out there! I hope the first week of May has been as good for you as it has been for me.
I've been especially busy this past month. Aside from blogging and general life, I've been preoccupied with my new puppy. I adopted an adorable Chihuahua last week, and so far, he's been keeping me exhausted and happy.

Despite my hectic schedule, I have a list of goals to accomplish for May. I find it really helpful to set new goals at the beginning of each month. I'm constantly making lists and notes on my phone of things I want or need to do. I've decided that at the beginning of each month, I will share my goals on Jackie O My! Goals are so much more enjoyable when you share them! I'd love to hear yours in the comments as well.

Why It's Okay To Be Upset Over Little Things

Monday, 24 April 2017
Why It's Okay To Be Upset Over Little Things - Jackie O My

For the past week, I've been stuck in a bad mood rut. Usually, I breeze right by minor setbacks, taking them in stride. Now, they're hitting me hard, leaving me grumpy and unsure what I'm even so upset about. I'm a big believer in the power of positivity, so I figured I could just will my bad feelings away, or at least squash them down until they disappeared on their own. Unfortunately, bad feelings will come out, no matter how hard you try to hold them in, and sometimes at inconvenient times.

Spring Tulips

Monday, 17 April 2017
Spring Tulips Outfit 1

Hello, and happy Monday! I hope your Easter weekend was as relaxing and stress-free as mine.

I've been loving the change from winter to spring. The sun has been peeking through the clouds more and more, and I've been spending my time taking long walks in the grass and happily reading good books at Starbucks.

It's so refreshing to finally shed my winter boots and jacket for sandals and pastel colours. I just bought this sweater from Aerie, and I believe it's my new favourite. The material is so soft! Try as I did, I couldn't get the words on the front, "Hello Sunshine", to show up in these pictures. Still, it perfectly captures my frame of mind today. Bring on the sun!

Simple Ways To Practice Hygge

Saturday, 18 March 2017
Simple Ways To Practice Hygge | Jackie O My

You may have seen the word hygge popping up on blogs and bookstore shelves lately, and wondered what it meant. However, hygge is nothing new; the Danish art of living well has actually been around since the 1800's. Pronounced "hoo-gah", the Norwegian term means "coziness" and "togetherness". To embrace hygge is to indulge in life's simple pleasures and be mindful doing it. It's not just a trend; it's a way of life.

I've been unknowingly practicing hygge for years, fashioning my home into a sanctuary of comfort and relaxation. Now that I've learned about hygge, I feel like I've finally found a lifestyle philosophy I can get behind: just fill up with comfort and contentedness and enjoy.

Interested in trying it out? Here is how you can practice hygge:
