How To Be A Fashion Blogger On A Budget

Earlier this month, I shared a list of my favourite resources for new fashion bloggers. If you've recently started a fashion blog of your own, you've probably realised by now that it takes more than design resources and worksheet freebies to keep it running; it takes a vast and ever-changing wardrobe.

You Are Beautiful

You Are Beautiful

Remember My Pale Skin's inspirational video about the unrealistic standard of beauty? It is one of my all time favourite videos on YouTube, and it continues to move me every time I watch it. I watch it when I feel insecure, and am reminded of two great truths about beauty. The first is that there is a huge double standard when it comes to appearance; if you're deemed unattractive, it's like a fatal fault in your character, one that is your responsibility to fix for the benefit of others. If you're attractive, however, you're perceived as fake and conceited.

The second truth is that every woman, no matter how beautiful, thin, or popular, is subjected to this same harsh criticism. There really is no winning. There seems to be an entire world of people out there that want you to feel bad about yourself. These people want you to feel inferior and insecure. The nasty comments on your Instagram pictures are not coming from a place of truth, but rather from the hope of hurting you as much as possible simply because they can. As if your appearance has anything to do with your right to feel happiness.

Book Club: The Little Book Of Hygge

Monday, 17 July 2017
Review: The Little Book Of Hygge | Jackie O My

As I said when I shared my Simple Ways To Practice Hygge, I'm totally interested in a lifestyle that embraces simple pleasures and comforts. After finishing The Little Book Of Hygge: The Danish Way To Live Well earlier this week, I'm looking forward to making hygge a part of my daily routine more than ever.

Meik Wiking is the CEO of the Happiness Research Institute in Copenhagen, as well as the author of The Little Book Of Hygge. I have to say that when it comes it Danish living, he really knows his stuff.

The Little Book is indeed petite and boasts a beautiful hardcover. The artwork is what drew me to this book in the first place (besides never needing an excuse to add some extra happiness to my life). The cover features a lovely hyggelig illustration of candles and a blue tea kettle; very fitting. The book contains pretty illustrated charts throughout, as well as lovely full page colour photos.

What is Hygge?

For those who don't know, hygge is a little difficult to define, but most agree it has to do with coziness, togetherness, contentedness, comfort, and wool sweaters. The first thing we learn in The Little Book Of Hygge is that Danes are crazy about candles. The book talks extensively about how to have a hygge home, hygge home decor,  how to dress in hygge clothing, and hygge traditions. I quickly felt overwhelmed and vaguely panicked; hygge is evidently a lot more effort than I anticipated. Meik Wiking admits that the Danish are perhaps a bit hygge obsessed. There is a lot of talk about adhering to hygge tradition. In fact, there's an entire section devoted to the origin of the word, and I won't lie, that section is dull. However, see it through; the book quickly shifts and picks up again.

I've been on a bit of a jewelry-buying binge lately. While I usually only wear earrings, I've been obsessed with that touch of shimmer Jewelry adds to an otherwise simple outfit. My favourite pieces are delicate and ethereal; unfortunately, it can be hard to find jewelry to suit my individual taste. If you too are looking for something extraordinary, I've collected the best places to shop for unique jewelry so you can browse to your heart's content!
