My Favourite Resources For New Fashion Bloggers

My Favourite Resources For New Fashion Bloggers

Happy birthday to us; today is the official one year anniversary of Jackie O My! To celebrate, I'm rounding up my favorite resources for new fashion bloggers.

Let me start this post by admitting that I am a blogging rookie. Although I consider myself a new blogger, I actually started four blogs before I finally stuck with this one. Altogether, I've been blogging off and on for a couple of years. As a perpetually new blogger, I consider myself an expert on starting blogs. Naturally, I've collected a few go-to tools along the way. If you're new to blogging or thinking of starting one of your own, try out my list of the best resources for new style bloggers!

Photography: A lot of bloggers swear by Photoshop, but the price is daunting for a blogging newbie, and honestly, I'm hopeless at using it! Instead, I use PicMonkey to edit outfit posts and create any graphics I need for social media. PicMonkey is free, beginner-friendly and gets the job done. Pixlr and Canva are also great options!

Filters: I apply filters to my Instagram pictures before I post them, but I'm not crazy about the in-app filters. For this, I love A Color Story. Trust me when I say it's an amazing app. It comes with a few free filter bundles, but I've purchased almost all the extra packs now. They're addictive, affordable, and there are so many, you can achieve virtually any effect you're going for.

Tip: I wish I had known when I started blogging how helpful it is to create a consistent Instagram theme! It helps your readers easily recognize your content and is generally more pleasing to the eye. The Wonder Forest has a great guide on that here.

Posts: When I finish writing a post, I give it a quick check with Grammarly to make sure there are no errors I missed while proofreading. It's immensely time-saving.

Post Titles: Lastly, I run post titles through the CoSchedule headline analyzer to find the most SEO and engagement friendly title.

Camera: For photography, I use a simple Sony Cyber-shot camera that my mom bought me for Christmas. Someday I would like to upgrade to a professional camera, but for now, this does the trick; there's no need to splurge on an expensive camera as a new blogger. I have also occasionally used my iPhone to take photos, and while I do recommend investing in a simple point-and-shoot, an iPhone can work in a pinch. PinkPot and A Beautiful Mess both have great tutorials on that. But as I've mentioned before, it can be tricky!

Tripod: If you plan on writing outfit posts and don't have someone willing to be your photographer, you're going to need a tripod. They can be pretty expensive, but I scored an amazing one from AmazonBasics for only $30!

Blog Design:

Many bloggers opt to design their own templates. If you can, great! This lazy girl, however, bought hers from LucaLogos. Mine cost roughly $40, but I love it so much, I feel it was worth the investment. Creative Market has tons of pretty, feminine themes available, which makes it my absolute favorite place for blog shopping.

If you're looking to splurge a bit, Envye has some beautiful blog templates for you to check out, too!

You can also find some lovely templates, including this one and this one, by searching "free blog templates" on Pinterest.

Articles & Tutorials:

There are a few blogs I love for their awesome blogging tutorials. Here are the articles that helped me most when starting Jackie O My.

The Wonder Forest: Dana has some incredibly informative articles over at The Wonder Forest. My favorites are Ten Secrets Of A Stellar Blog PostHow To Effectively Promote Your Blog Content, and How To Take Amazing Outfit Photos.

A Girl, Obsessed: This is another go-to site for me. My fave articles are 5 Quick Blog Makeover Tips and My Best Tips For Starting A Blog.

A Beautiful Mess: Elsie and Emma are pros at all things blogging. How Long Does It Take To Draft Content and How To Start Your Blog With A Bang are must-reads.

Free Resources:

Blog Planning: I recently bought a Ban.Do agenda to plan my blog posts, but before that, I was using this free printable planner. It works really well and has a simple, pretty layout. I've found it's really important to plan content in advance. Otherwise, I'm never able to keep all my ideas straight.

Post Scheduling: Buffer is a great tool that allows you to plan your social media sharing in advance. It even automatically posts for you!

Stock Photos: Ashley Creates Things offers the prettiest free stock photos around! You can find them here and here.

Freebies: Creative Market offers weekly free goods which can include fonts, stock photos, clip art, and more.

Tip: If you're looking for any free resource for your blog, Pinterest is always a great place to try. Simply type in "free stock photos", for example.
